My official genealogy journey started in 2012, although I have always had a love for family history. An early memory of mine takes me back to when I was 10 years old, sitting and reading my Mom’s Family History Book. I loved flipping through the pages and looking at all the names and dates, wondering “Who were all these people? How did they live day to day?”
Genealogy and family history has become more than simply a past-time or hobby for me. Learning who my ancestors were and the times they lived in gives me perspective on my life and family. I found myself asking “Who am I; where did my ancestors come from; how many people had to live and love, just to make me the way I am?” As a woman I felt drawn to connect with all the mothers in my family tree, to share in the strength and joy that comes from giving life into our families. As a wife I wanted to connect with all the men in the tree, to value and respect the way they provided for their families (or sometimes not) and the hardships they endured while doing so. Researching these men and women has helped me recognize strengths and weaknesses, hopes and dreams, and the love I have in my own life.
I hope to share with you everything I uncover during this thrilling journey (although I know sitting in a library on a sunny Saturday morning doesn’t appeal to most people!), and as I learn more, my insights and the sources that brought me to them will be shared. I hope to be careful and not make any mistakes, but alas, I am human and we all fall short. If you do come across anything incorrect or off-putting, including speelling erors, please do not hesitate to contact me to resolve it amicably.
Thank you for taking the time to look into Our Family Shrub and I hope you discover something new too!
